Continuing the list of board books for babies, we're now getting into books with maybe a little more plot (rather than just pages with images and words), slightly more complicated illustrations, and more subtle colors. But not much. Babies definitely respond to books that reflect their lives, so photos of babies are still great, plus stories about baby's life. Here are some of my favorites:
QUIET LOUD and other titles by Leslie Patricelli
Leslie Patricelli's books are so underrated. They're funny, bright, and perfectly reflect a baby's life with just the right amount of silliness. QUIET LOUD is one of my favorites, along with YUMMY YUCKY.
THE BABIES AND DOGGIES BOOK by John Schindel and Molly Woodward
Photographs of babies and doggies, with lines of text about how they're similar. What more could you possibly want? There are also BABIES AND KITTIES and BABIES AND BUNNIES books. These would be perfect for a family that has both a baby and a family pet.
WHOSE TOES ARE THOSE? by Jabari Asim and LeUyen Pham
I didn't realize until I was writing this that I have TWO favorite board books about toes. Hmm. Maybe it's because baby toes are inherently cute? At any rate, this is a celebration of a brown baby's beautiful toes. See also: WHOSE KNEES ARE THESE?
BABY TOUCH AND FEEL (ANY) published by DK
Babies are learning with all their senses so it's always fun to add a touch-and-feel book to the mix! You can talk about the textures as you're sharing it so that baby is starting to learn new sensory words.
MAKING FACES: A FIRST BOOK OF EMOTIONS published by Abrams Appleseed
More baby faces! Babies are learning to about facial expressions and emotions and this one combines the two.
SCRATCHIE: A TOUCH-AND-FEEL CATVENTURE by Maria Putri
More touch-and-feel, but this time in the silly frame of everything a cat scratches.
I LOVE ALL OF ME! by Lorie Ann Grover and Carolina Búzio
Another celebration of babies, but this time with sweet retro-feeling, bright-colored illustrations. This padded, oversize book is extra-easy for little hands to handle.
PRIDE COLORS by Robin Stevenson
Not only are we learning about colors, but with this book we're also celebrating being yourself and unconditional love! What could be better?
BESOS FOR BABY by Jen Arena and Blanca Gómez
Blanca Gómez is one of my favorite illustrators so I had to include this sweet book. Spanish words and phrases are interspersed throughout. Bebé has besos for everyone!
GLOBAL BABIES by The Global Fund for Children
More photos of babies - but this time, all around the world! Every child can see themselves in this colorful book. There are also boy- and girl-specific titles, as well as a Global Babies bedtime and playtime books.
